The event is Mystic India: The World Tour at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Prudential Hall on March 8^th for one performance only, by the noted choreographer Amit Shah, director of Aatma Performing Arts.

The show promises to be a lush visual treat as vibrant dancers, aerialists and acrobats perform a spectrum of dances from different regions of India in over 750 opulent costumes. For Bollywood fans the celebration of Indian cinema with music and dance from some of the most beloved films is a must-see.

Indian Threads, American Tapestry

The roots of the show go right back to India. Amit Shah, who grew up in New Jersey, recalls a defining moment. He was visiting his family’s hometown in India.  While buying vegetables in the market with his mother, he found people around were surprised that he could actually speak in his native tongue, Gujarati. “Just because I was born in America, doesn’t mean I don’t know my roots!” he remembers thinking at that time and determined to keep connected with Indian culture through music and dance by forming his own dance company in the US.

“When I first created Mystic India, I wanted to spread our love for Indian culture around the world and represent India in the most accurate way,” says Shah, who’s taken this show to four continents to over 200,000 people.  “My goal was to change the way Bollywood dance was represented on the international platform, as it’s being commercialized and losing authenticity. I am proud of our diverse cast for being such genuine ambassadors of Indian culture.”

Mystic India covers all aspects of dance from classical Indian to Bollywood dance, with touches of hip-hop, ballet, fusion and modern. It has color, grandeur and drama – and captures the Broadway show experience with an Indian flavor.

What is particularly exciting for the burgeoning Indian community in the tri-state area is this first collaboration with NJPAC, a noted mainstream cultural organization; the arts and culture of India will now be seen by a much larger American audience, which is a matter of pride for all Indian-Americans who want to share their arts and traditions with the  nation. This first performance also points to the fact that Indian-Americans are very much on the radar of  a noted arts organization like the NJPAC which will be showcasing many more Indian performing arts in the future.
