The Single Desi Reviews the Hot Shows – The Mindy Project & More
Fall is here and that means the networks are testing their new shows. Which shows will make the cut? Which shows will be a hit with viewers? Which shows will tank? Well after last season, ‘Revenge’ is a definite hit, so that has its steady base of fans. Kardashians have proven themselves on the E! Network; ‘Married to Jonas’ is like ‘Nick and Jessica’ 10 years later, Wow! Have that many years passed since their love story was played out in the public eye? Nick and Jessica were the pioneers of reality television.
‘The Voice’, ‘X factor’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars’ are all returning with a bang. Who will be this season’s winner? I love Britney and Christina, therefore the Voice and X factor are my must-see shows on my list.
In order to break up all that reality TV, one needs a little fantasy and fiction and therefore dramas and comedies are good option to tune into. ‘Revenge’, the new show; ‘The Mindy Project’ and ‘666 Park Avenue’ are good options.
On Tuesday night I caught the premiere of ‘The Mindy Project’. I thought it was a good show. It was light and funny and definitely worth the time especially if you are a single desi and going through the process of trying to find the love of your life!
For those of you who don’t know who Mindy Kaling is, she is an actress, writer and producer who played the role of Kelly Kapoor on ‘The Office’. On the first episode of ‘The Mindy Project’, she tackled real life concerns that we all struggle with. Having gone through her 20’s and now in her early 30’s, she is asking questions, such as where is my Prince Charming? Why haven’t I found him yet?
Although she accomplished her career goals (she is a physician on the show), her romantic goals were way off the traditional time line. She struggled with issues that all smart, goal-oriented desis struggle with. The one thing I love about Kaling is that she is not afraid to be herself. She is not residing in America and mentally living in India (and trying to be traditional in a nontraditional world). She reminds me of myself.
She is very Americanized and although she is educated about the Indian culture, she considers herself an American. I once read that she doesn’t even think about being Indian. She dated Caucasians, race did not appear to be an issue and she even talked about how she wanted to date seriously on the show by not having sex too quickly. A lot of 30-something girls want to be taken more seriously in their 30’s as they are wiser and more mature than their 20’s. They see life as more of long term. 20-something women are still stuck in the right now. I, as a single desi, could totally relate to her show and I think you will be able to relate to it as well. Tune in, as I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
The Single Desi on 666 Park Avenue
On Sunday night, I caught the premiere of ‘666 Park Avenue’. What got me intrigued about this particular drama is that it takes place in New York City and it is a scary thriller. I love anything where the residents are living and working in New York City. The basic setup goes like this: Henry and Jane are the new managers of this historic New York Drake Hotel, in exchange for an amazingly swanky apartment of their dreams. They work for Gavin Doran and Olivia, who are secretly involved in a soul trading business (I know, crazy right?)
I enjoyed the pilot. It set the tone for a thriller that appears to build on curiosity. I had tons of questions that I hope will be answered as time goes on. There were only two scenes that left me freaked out:
- The Elevator Scene: I hate seeing people suffer. Anyone that takes elevators knows that it is anyone’s worst fear if an elevator closes on you unexpectantly- AND then starts to move up and down. Brian and his wife were leaving the elevator when it went haywire and it closed in on he – thankfully she survived; not without being severely injured though. How traumatic! It was during this scene that I started thinking about the unpredictability of life.
- The Basement Scenes: Dark creepy basements give me goosebumps. I mean all the scary things happen down there. I can just tell there is a back-story in the basement that I want to uncover. Even though the scares are minimal, they are effective.
