Ink to flesh, hard-core.

we’d appreciate body art more.”

Definition of a tattoo: The act or practice of marking the skin with indelible patterns, pictures, legends, etc., by making punctures in it and inserting pigments.
Bollywood Tattoo Mania: Saif, Kareena, Deepika & Ranbir…
I have always been fascinated with tattoos, all kinds of tattoos. Every time I see someone sporting a tattoo, I tell myself: come tomorrow, I am going to a tattoo parlor and getting one on my wrist! It started with a friend getting her friend’s name tattooed on her shoulder. I loved the idea of showing someone how much you love them by imprinting their name on your body. Tattoo is a public display of your love for someone or something, nothing private about it!
I happened to watch a teaser of ‘India’s most desirable’, and heard Simi Garewal ask Deepika Padukone about her ‘RK ‘tattoo. Deepika had been so much in love that she had gotten Ranbir Kapoor’s initials tattooed on the back of her neck. But after the break-up, she still hadn’t gotten it removed. When asked why she hadn’t removed it, she said, “It brings back fond memories”. Aww…how sweet!! But what about her current heart-throb? Doesn’t he mind someone else’s name on her body, permanently tattooed for the entire world to see? Guess not.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, come to mind, when we talk about tattoos. Saif has ‘Kareena’ written on his forearm, in Devnagiri script. But God forbid, if they ever break up, what happens to the tattoo then? Does he look for a girl with the same name or does he look for a tattoo artist who will work miracles and totally transform the artwork, like Vimal to Vendetta?
Why can’t people in love be far-sighted and decide beforehand that there will be no bodily piercings involved in their relationship? Even if they do decide to have their friend’s/lover’s name tattooed on their bodies, why don’t they stick to the initials? It’s much easier to edit an alphabet than a name.
I know of a girl who was going around with a guy, whose name began with a V, let’s call him Vimal. After they broke up, she got a line tattooed across the V, and changed into the popular symbol from the movie “V for Vendetta”. Atta girl, Innovative! Don’t you think so? Not to mention, just like she had once shown affection and love through her tattoo, she was now just displaying her ‘modified’ feelings. (That Vimal better be careful.)
Bollywood movies in India have had a long association with tattoos and their aftermath. Siblings, especially twins, used to get their names tattooed on their forearms, and then invariably separate due to some natural calamity or in a crowded place like a fair. And then, at the end of the movie, they were always reunited because of those very tattoos.
Amitabh Bachchan immortalized tattoos with his movie ‘Deewar’, where the moral police tattooed “Mera baap chor hai” on his forearm. Another movie which centered on a tattoo was ’Hanste Zakhm’; In this movie, the lead actress Priya Rajvansh gets her best friend’s name tattooed on her arm, and her friend gets Priya’s name tattooed on hers. But the tragedy is that when kidnappers come to abduct her friend, they pick Priya up because of her tattoo. Her life is ruined as she is pushed into prostitution by her kidnappers and she has an untimely and sad end.
Bollywood Tattoos: A Love Story
Bollywood has a number of celebrities sporting a variety of tattoos: Hrithik and wife Suzanne have identical star-shaped tattoos on their wrists. Akshay Kumar has a tattoo with his son Araav’s name on his back. Arjun Rampal has a modern-art inspired tattoo on his arm. Actor Imran Khan has a sun-shaped tattoo down his nape. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan had a temporary tattoo down his left arm for promotion of his Kolkata Knight Riders team last year. Sanjay Dutt has gone ahead of everyone, as he now sports not one, but multiple tattoos on his forearm. Kareena’s name, splashed in Hindi across Saif’s arm, is hauntingly similar to David Beckham’s ‘Victoria’ in Hindi tattoo.
Tattoo Power
Having said all this, I still want to get a tattoo. In fact, even Kriti is toying with the idea of getting one, but we haven’t decided where we want them yet. I think wrists are a good option, maybe even ankles. It’s too painful to even think of getting a tattoo on any other part of the body. However, we’re sort of certain of one thing: instead of tattooing names of our soul mates or even Japanese love symbols, we will go in for meaningful initials like CF (curryflavour), ISD (groupisd), LWL (lassiwithlavina) and SP (socialpotpourri), for these were the people who truly believed in us, and helped us during our struggling days.

@Antara, welcome to chatty divas and thanks for your comment. I am going in for a cute tattoo soon. Appreciate your compliment.
Very interesting article Sulekha. I am someone who would stay miles away from piercings and tattoos :p but as far as the bollywood divas are concerned I really like Gul Panang’s tattoo on her back, a small cute butterfly…:-)
@Rimly, Thanks a ton dear. Sorry to hear about your aversion to tattoos, you would have looked great sporting an angel tattoo :). Love is blind but it’s a curable condition, then comes the humiliating part of living with the best-forgotten tattooed names. People who stand by you, never desert you so their initials make for great tattoos. Thank you for your encouraging compliment.
Great article with a good insight into the world of tattoos! I have little to choose from since I somehow am quite put off by tattoos (so I don’t quite agree with the people with tattoos and the people who’re scared…what about the ones who’re turned off by them?? 🙂 )
Nevertheless, I think some of the points raised here are quite hilarious. But hey! How can one have a practical side to being in love? Isn’t that still supposed to be blind? I think it’s like having pre-nups! Very touching to hear about etching the names of those who’ve stood by you. Definitely a deep thought.
@Ruchi, thank you so much for visiting and commenting. If hubby has a spring break tattoo, you can have a mid-life crisis tattoo 🙂 Let me know what design you are going in for…thanks
@Someone is special, fancy sells, maybe that’s why.Welcome to chatty divas and thank you for reading and commenting, appreciate it…
Sulekha..Loved your post! I have always wanted to get a tattoo also..but never had the guts to get it done..Hubby has always been like”Go for it”(who has one BTW..one of those spring break mistakes from the college days..LOL). I have had the tattoo even picked out for years but not sure where to get one and also have always wondered what the family (specifically my mom & my 12 yr old daughter)would think of it! One friend even told me that me wanting to get a tattoo is me having a mid-life crisis!! We were walking down the street in Mykonos, Greece a few yrs ago and hubby was really like..go for it!!! Nearly did it..but then chickened out..:) But with each passing day, the desire to get a tattoo is diminishing…So let’s see if there is a tattoo in my future!
@Shyamala, Thanks a ton dear, glad you liked it and Shloka made this tattoo in 2 minutes flat.
@Raj, thanks for the lovely compliments, you will see “that” tattoo very soon.

And miles to go before I sleep…”

Hey, nice post Lucks & nice tattoo work Shloka!!!
Nice Lucks… refreshing and resounding, just wondering when am I going to see “that” tattoo….:)
@Priyashmita, I will definitely let you know, in fact I will put up a picture of my tattoo on Facebook for all my friends to see. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
Nice post. Earlier it used to be ‘pachai’ and now they have made it as a fancy thing.. Hmm
@Abhisek, I am a potpourri of emotions at all times :)Thanks for the read and the comment. Golmaal also has Ajay Devgan sporting a tattoo, thanks for the reminder. Will wait and watch what design you go in for, best of luck.
@Jenni, welcome to Chatty Divas and thanks for reading and commenting. Nice to know that you have such meaningful tattoos, 17 years is a long time, touch wood and congrats. Sorry about the tragedy in your life and your sister’s name will make a fond tattoo. Kids names are sweet too, maybe I will think about them for my body art. Thanks and God bless.
well, so decided what to get for a tattoo? Look forward to seeing it.
Nice to see that you are moving between different topics rather than sticking to one.You seems like a really colorful personality. I never thought about getting a tattoo…in case I try one, it will always be one of my own designs and definitely not any name. Interesting read…and Ajay Devgn’s Golmaal is also in the list of films associated with tattoos. 😀
Tattoos are a great way of expressing something you care about. It is not something to be taken lightly since they are permanent. I currently have 4; my husband’s nickname, my nickname, the masks of comedy and tragedy and the Boston Celtics. I know names are a no-no but, I got it years ago and we’ve been married 17 years in Sept. I had a tragedy that day and will never get it removed because of what it represents. I will be getting my sister’s name since she died unexpectedly and eventually my kids’ names and a cross. Be careful they are very addictive. lol Good luck deciding.
@Mitr,
“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. ~William Arthur Ward”
We believe in giving beautifully wrapped presents 🙂 Thanks for the read. Yes this weekend sounds great for a tattoo session…
@Monica, Why do we let our emotions rule our heads when we are in love? Former lover’s name inked permanently! Laser is the answer. Thanks for visiting and commenting.
@Melissa, thanks for the comment and infections can set in if the needles are not sterilized, so it’s best to go to a clean and hygienic tattoo parlor. A cross sounds cool and names are a no-no. Love that you like this different topic I chose for our chatty divas.
@Swati, As long as you are not getting a name tattooed on your body it’s fine. Get a star or a quill…my friends suggested these and they seem nice. Thanks for reading me and commenting.
@Simran, thanks for the compliment and yes tattoos are in vogue nowadays. The symbol of love remains the evergreen choice of all those in love.
Couldn’t agree more with you Mitr! Thanks for expressing my sentiments here for me. I would absolutely etch none other the names you have mentioned. It’s even a half commitment already – shall we head out this weekend then?
Tattoos can be sexy, but not if you have a former lover etched in your skin, ha!…love your post:)
Once my boyfriend asked me if he could have a tattoo on his arm… and I really wanted to know what figure he’d be getting…i was surprised that he wanted a cross. It sounds cool and sexy to have a tattoo… but I don’t encourage my patients for fear of hepatitis and other related diseases they might get from tattoo-piercing…
And the factors you’ve mentioned… what if I changed my partner…his name will forever be etched on my skin…ouch!
loved your post Sulekha…it’s different from the usual read…YEY!
🙂 Nice post!! I want to get a tattoo too someday…love the idea. But what should I get, not a name, just some nice design…thinking!!
Hi Sulekkha :)..
Hmm..Tattoo ..I love tattoos but never tried, they are so trendy nowadays! Nice to see that you wrote something different! Loved it..especially that symbol of love 😀
