21 Questions for Amin Dhillon from Monica Marwah on Sex & the Single Desi
A femme fatale is a woman who is sexy and strong; dangerous and mysterious; cool and confident.
-Britney Spears
Being single, sexy and fabulous is a choice that only the strongest and most confident desi women make. I use the term femme fatale to describe this type of woman. I love talking to other single and successful desi woman about their views on dating, romance and relationships.
Amin Dhillon fits the definition of a femme fatale perfectly. She is smart, beautiful and vibrant. Her drive and perseverance has opened up so many opportunities for her. She has also paved the way for other desi’s to be inspired and reach insurmountable heights.
Amin represented Canada at the 2010 Miss India Worldwide pageant in Durban, South Africa in March 2010. Amin placed in the TOP 10 and won the inaugural Miss Professional Award. Amin also has a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Human Resources Management. She recently launched an online fashion boutique called GP Fashion Clothing.
In 2011, Amin was named in the Top 10 Indian models, along with Padma Lakshmi and Deepika Padukone. Amin is currently working on writing a series of novels geared at youth, working on television producing and hosting, and continuing to work as an international host, actress and model.
1. What kind of qualities do you look for in a guy?
I am attracted to men that are driven and ambitious. Nothing is sexier than a guy who knows what he wants to do in life and is working towards his goals. I am very ambitious so I need a guy who can support me in reaching my goals and understand my drive to succeed.
I also love a guy with a sense of humor. I love to crack jokes and make fun of things so I need a guy who can laugh with me! I also look for a guy who gets along with my friends and family, a social butterfly. I am super easy going with everyone I meet so I need a guy who doesn’t mind being my date to social events from parties to gala dinners to networking events. If a guy doesn’t get along with my closest friends and family, he’s out!
Some other qualities are kindness and good manners. If I see a guy mistreat a waitress or put someone down, that’s a total turn off.
2. What is your idea of the perfect date?
I love dates where it’s not your average dinner and a movie date. The perfect date would be to try something new with that person. I like going out a picnic or walking around a zoo or something where it’s out of your normal routine and gets you moving around but you can still have a great conversation and get to know each other better.
3. What perfume do you wear on your dates?
I own a dozen different perfumes so really it’s whatever I’m in the mood for. I have almost every celebrity perfume out there but I also wear a lot of Victoria’s Secret perfumes. I also wear some to bed! I usually shower before bed and I’ll spritz some perfume on. It makes me feel girly!
4. Do you date outside your culture?
Of course! I date a person based on who they are as an individual and not what country/race/religion they are. I do tend to date people that are like me with similar values and beliefs.
5. What is the nicest thing a guy has ever done for you?
Once I was studying for a hard exam and this guy showed up with a care pack with goodies like junk food and coffee to help me study! He just showed up and dropped it off because he didn’t want to distract me but wanted to make me comfortable while I studied in the library. I thought that was sweet. I also had a guy drive a few hours to come visit me just for the day while I was working in a nearby city. Things like that show me that I’m important if they are willing to go that extra mile just to see me.
6. Do you ever feel as if you are attracting the same man over and over again or do you attract all sorts of men?
That’s a good question! I wish I knew! Seriously guys do not approach me. I can be very shy when I meet a new guy so there’s no way I would ever go up to a guy I thought was cute and strike up a conversation. So only the ones who are very bold will come up to me and a lot of times they come on too strong. I actually had more guys approach me before I entered pageants. Once I had my pageant title, I noticed more and more guys would only come up to me to talk about my title or to get a fan photo. Hey, maybe guys don’t find beauty queens attractive anymore!
7. Is it easier or harder to get dates due to the fact that you were a beauty pageant winner? Do you feel that men are intimidated by your beauty and status?
I think it’s harder! People don’t realize that just because I’m a beauty queen and used to being in the public eye doesn’t mean I don’t get shy! I do! I totally wish more guys would approach me and act normal. I swear I’m nice! LOL
I can see why it would be intimating. I look at some of my friends who are also beauty queens and I’m like how is it possible that a group of beauty queens are sitting here and not one guy is approaching our table? I think people have this misconception that beauty queens are full of themselves. While I can’t speak for everyone, I can honestly say that even with having won a beauty pageant, I still consider myself a little nerdy!
8. How do you usually meet men?
I like meeting guys through mutual friends. It’s nice knowing someone who can give you the back story on the guy. I have met too many fake people at events. The best guys I have ever dated are the ones I met through mutual friends. If I’m into a guy, I’ll ask my friends all about him to find out what he’s really like and if they think he’s a good guy for me.
9. What kind of men are you most attracted to?
I have a huge weakness for athletes! I love a man who is aggressive in his work but knows how to be soft and sensitive with me at home! I like feeling protected so I tend to go for the guys who are taller than me and athletic. I also am attracted to guys who are well groomed and have a good sense of style.
10. If you had one wish, what would it be?
Honestly, I just wish for a happy and successful future. No matter what the future has in store, I just want everyone I love to be happy and healthy.
11. Do you cook for yourself? And if so, what are your favorite dishes?
I do cook! I can make any sabzi/dal/curry! My mom is a vegetarian so I am better at making vegetarian food. My favorite meal is making tofu veggie sabzi with whole wheat roti, raita, and kheer for dessert! I can also cook a delish lasagna
12. Do you live by yourself?
Nope! But it feels like I do! I still love at home with my mom. Unless I end up moving to another city, I will live with my mom until I get married. I don’t see the point in moving out! My mom and I are very close so I can’t imagine living in the same city but not living together. It’s just weird.
13. As a single woman, how do you spend most of your free time?
Work! Right now I’m working on so many projects. I have just launched my first jewelry collection on my website (www.amindhillon.com), I’m working on a TV show development deal, I’m working on my book, and because I have tons of media appearances coming up, I am whipping my body into shape! My days are spent working all hours and hitting the gym.
Since I’m single right now, I also love girl’s nights out. From hosting dinner parties to just having drinks and catching up, I love spending time with my girls! I’m also a huge fan of social media. I love interacting with fans through my facebook page, my official website blog, or on twitter!
This year, I plan on making it my best year to date. I want to go back to India and explore the beauty of the country. Every time I have gone, I am so wrapped up in work that I never get to see beyond the hotels and studios. I totally want to go and be a little tourist. From trekking across the desert to exploring heritage sites, I love history so I’m planning on visiting India soon.
14. What kind of music do you have on your iPod right now?
I am really into Hindi music right now. I love it! I listen to a huge mix, everything from Pit bull to Pussycat dolls to Bollywood tracks to even a few Punjabi tracks.
15. What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Watching Indian soap operas. Yes I’ll admit it. As much as I make fun of Indian soap operas, I can’t help but watch a few shows. Why can’t the people on those shows ever be happy? There are always issues with the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law! Some of those shows are so bad and cheesy but yet you can’t look away!
16. Who inspires you in Bollywood and why?
I would say Aishwarya Rai. I think too many people in Hollywood or even in the entertainment industry in general get stuck on achieving in just their careers that they lose balance. Aishwarya seems to have a balance with her career and family. She’s hugely successful, she is involved in various charities programs and gives back to the community and she makes time for love. That’s what I want for my future. I want to have it all and I think I can. In the next four years, I expect to continue to work on expanding my career goals, being married and having kids, and contributing to making my community better.
17. What would people be surprised to know about you?
That I’m funny! I get that all the time. People who get to know me have often told me in shock that I’m funny. I love making fun of things and I love making fun of myself. Seriously, that’s why I don’t care if someone tries to put me down b/c I don’t take myself seriously. I am also very loyal. One of the things I pride myself on is being loyal and trustworthy. I like being the person who everyone can come to with anything and they can expect that I will keep what they say private and actually give them good advice.
18. List 3 things you can’t live without
My family and friends
My laptop and internet
My Blackberry!
19. If you had to choose, Hot romance or Hot sex?
Hot romance b/c I think when you have hot romance, then everything else is amazing too. I don’t believe in one night stands or flings. I am very much of a relationship person and I’m all about the romance!
20. What words do you live by?
‘God only gives us what He knows we have the strength to face.’ I believe things happen for a reason. Everything that has happened to me has made me a stronger, better person. My mother always told me when I was growing up that I could do whatever I put my mind to. She would tell me that God gives us the tools and skills we need to succeed but it’s up to us to use those tools and skills. Because of that, I work hard to achieve my goals, even when I don’t always succeed the first time. Take the beauty pageant. I believed in myself and leapt into my first pageant without having a hot clue as to what I was doing. I made it as a runner up, to my surprise. Then I worked harder the next time and learned from my past mistakes to go on to win Miss India Worldwide Canada.
Lesson learned? Just because you don’t succeed the first time doesn’t mean you can’t achieve. Just keep trying until you do!
21. Do you believe in love at first sight? Has it ever happened for you?
I’m not sure if I do. I’ve never had love at first sight. I remember having a few instances where you would meet someone and feel a connection but I wouldn’t say that connection resulted in love. For me, I fall in love once I know that person on a deeper level. You could drive the nicest car or wear the hottest designer clothes but what’s really going to get me to fall for you is your heart. Cheesy I know but if you’re a sweet, kind person, that will make me definitely crush on you. I can recall meeting guys initially without much of a thought but then seeing them be super sweet to a group of children or being kind to a complete stranger or seeing them love and respect their mothers. That’s what tugs at my heart strings!
Thanks Amin for the chat
xoxo
