[dropcap]V[/dropcap]ikas Khanna’s ‘The Last Color’ has been seen at scores of film festivals including the New York Film Festival and at a special screening at the UN, and has won awards in Stuttgart and Dallas. While it had a theatrical release in India, the onset of the pandemic did not permit this luxury in the US. Now the good news is that ‘The Last Color’ is being streamed on Amazon Prime. So now, instead of coming to a theater near you, it’s coming to your home! ‘The Last Color’ is now in the top 7 among the top 50 films on Amazon Prime Video In.
[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ased on a book authored by Vikas Khanna, this little gem of a film is produced and directed by him and is just the upbeat positive film you need in our difficult times. ‘The Last Color’, starring Neena Gupta, is about marginalized lives in Varanasi and the triumph of the human spirit.
The seed of the story lies in a visit to the Ghats. Khanna recalled how the widows in the holy city were shunned and how it really disturbed him: “It broke me – I felt very insignificant and small that I couldn’t do anything about it. It was so moving to me when the Supreme Court gave orders permitting these widows to play holi for the first time.”
[dropcap]‘T[/dropcap]he Last Color’ celebrates this important change but also the larger story of woman empowerment. It is about society’s misfits – Noor, a widow who’s been discarded by her family and is passing her days in an ashram on the ghats and Choti, a young Dalit street child who survives as a rope-walker.
The film shows how manmade traditions can be challenged by female power – in this true story, Choti grows up to be a lawyer and bring about social changes in the lives of widows and street children. Noor, played by the wonderful Neena Gupta, and Choti, by the very natural newcomer Aqsa Siddiqui, have great chemistry and you get totally invested in their special relationship. So watch ‘The Last Color’ for Vikas Khanna’s heartfelt direction, the evocative cinematography and for the emotional story. Khanna proves that a Michelin chef can also be an emphatic storyteller. You are going to enjoy this feel-good film – so check it out on Amazon Prime.
