Summer’s Last Hurrah – Dancing on Water, Catching Stars
[dropcap]A[/dropcap]s the cold days of winter approach, we share with you the golden haze of sizzling summer when dancing feet, sky and water churned together to make it all sweet, endless, timeless. The event was the outdoor IAAC Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance which showcased topnotch talent from India and New York, turning the waterfront into a dance arena with hundreds of New Yorkers learning about the intricacies of Indian dance. Even Lady Liberty watched!
This gorgeous event was hosted by the Battery Dance Festival at the Robert Wagner Park in Battery Place, and this annual summer celebration is always free to the public. (IAAC also hosts indoor performances, workshops and panels. More details at www.iaac.us )
The performers included Avijit Das (Kuchipudi) from Chennai in his US debut; Surabhi Bharadwaj (Bharata Natyam), Sooraj Subramaniam (Oddisi) from Belgium; Carolina Prada (Chau) who is the only female soloist of this generation to perform professionally in Mayurbhanj Chau; Krishan Mohan Mishra (Kathak) from an illustrious Kathak family which includes Shambu Maharaj and Birju Maharaj; Sumeet Nagdev Arts Dance Company which performs in many parts of the world; and New York’s own Battery Dance Company created by artistic director and choreographer Jonathan Hollander. They performed the Durga Project which seemed to gel perfectly with this evening of Indian dance.
Here’s a photo gallery which captures the evocative and sultry summer evening which with the jingling of bells and drums, slowly disappeared into the darkness of the night…
