Little Black Book:
Tara Bhuyan’s New York Fashion Week Dinner for Power Women
There was electricity in the air, a tangible spark, and it wasn’t due to lights or candles or solar power – but due to the presence of 22 strong women – and a few good men. The event was a private dinner at the gorgeous Sona to celebrate the presence of Assamese designer Tara Bhuyan in the New York Fashion Week and through her unique work, the larger celebration of unsung women weavers of Assam; Women who have toiled in anonymity are finally getting their place in the sun through Tara’s innovative presentations on the runway at Sony Hall in Times Square.Tara Bhuyan is already well-known to a whole generation of young brides who want to honor their roots but bring all their many personas to their memorable wedding ensembles. With her deep belief in sustainable fashion, Tara creates fabric jewels which can be passed from generation to generation, honoring the work of Assamese craftswomen who weave dreams for the world on their humble looms.
Guests heard Tara’s inspiring story about how she, a young mother started stores in Delhi and Toronto, production in Assam and got invited to participate in NYFW and is headed next to Dubai. Then each shared their own stories and this rocking bunch is in everything from entrepreneurship to the arts to academia and business. One of New York’s power women is S. Mitra Kalita of URL Media. The company she co-founded with Sara M. Lomax has just secured a major million dollar investment from the Knight Foundation for advancing social justice among black and brown communities. So what better way to spend an evening than with supportive positive women and with the anticipation of a unique fashion show by Tara Bhuyan coming up at Sony Hall in Times Square? The delicious menu at Sona whetted everyone’s appetite for the upcoming fashion feast. Tara, a big believer in sustainability, gifted everyone woven bags made from the leaves of water hyacinths. In this perfect universe nothing goes waste and beauty is celebrated in all its forms.
