A Caravan of Ideas – JLF comes to New York
JLF Opening Reception at the Sundaram Tagore Gallery
[dropcap]F[/dropcap]or all those who can’t get to India to that gem of words, art and music – the Jaipur Literary Festival – the JLF comes to you. For two days – 12th and 13th September the JLF bandwagon stops in New York and juggles words, music, art, showcasing the world of books. The opening reception at the beautiful new Sundaram Tagore brought in writers, readers, book celebrities, artists and socialites all sipping white wine and catching up with old friends and new. There was a huge added art bonus too – guests got to see the powerful exhibition – Native American Art Now which celebrates the emergence of contemporary Indigenous art as the art world becomes aware of the beautiful stories which have existed in silence.
It was interesting that JLF also introduced the work of Abhishek Singh – “The Enlightened Ones: Hymns of Medhini”. In case you’re wondering, Medhini is the Sanskrit word of “the ancient earth” and Singh’s work showed the power of nature, of disappearing worlds which need to be embraced and acknowledged.
[dropcap]W[/dropcap]ith many thinkers and artists in the crowd, the conversations were stimulating and an aperitif before the full day’s session at Asia Society the next day ranging from A Universe Built on Math: The Big Bang of Numbers with writer and mathematician Manil Suri in conversation with Patrick Honner; Writing Tibet, Remembering Tibet, a conversation with Dominique Townsend, Tsering Wangmo and Tenzin Dickie; and The Paradoxes of India – a provocative discussion with Shashi Tharoor with Seema Sirohi. Now that’s a feast!
