Come Celebrate Cherry Blossoms in New York’s Central Park.
I wanted to see the cherry blossoms but couldn’t get to Tokyo. So I saw the gorgeous cherry blossoms, not with an airline ticket but with my MTA card! I just walked to New York’s Central Park where the beautiful cherry blossoms are in full bloom. To honor the season, I wore my pink cherry blossom shirt and strolled the Reservoir in Central Park with my friends Aiko and Nita, and hundreds of others on this beautiful, windy Sunday.

Everyone was out there, taking selfies and family pictures in front of the cherry blossoms, as if they were the Taj Mahal. From April to May, the cherry blossom trees are the highlight of any walk in the park and attract droves of sight-seers.
According to the Central Park website, “the full bloom of the cherry blossom trees is a sight to behold, and it’s typically reached within a week after the first buds open. Symbolic of the fleeting nature of life, their season is short-lived, and the blossoms stick around for just a small amount of time before their delicate petals fall and cover the ground in a blanket of pink and white.”
The bloom times are as follows:
- Early to mid-April – Yoshino cherry trees and Magnolia trees, which also have beautiful blooms.
- Early May – Kwanzan cherry trees
Searching for these beautiful blooms is like going on a treasure hunt but here are the tips to get you there.
Locations of the Cherry Blossom Trees
The cherry blossom trees in Central Park can be found mainly between 72nd Street and 96th Street.
The highest concentrations are around the Reservoir, Cherry Hill, Pilgrim Hill, Great Lawn, Cedar Hill, and the area just south of Cedar Hill, between 74th and 77th Streets.
To make it easy for explorers, there’s even a map to show you all the locations of the blooms.

After you’ve had your fill of the beauties, you can sit down to a pre-planned picnic lunch or explore the many cafes and restaurants in the surrounding streets. After our gorgeous stroll we ended up at The Surrey Hotel’s Casa Tua for hot chocolate and cappuccinos. Perfect after an invigorating stroll in the nippy Spring weather.
Catch the cherry blossom before it’s all gone!
